Fresco Tours
The Old Macaroni Factory is Australia's oldest
Italian building established in 1859 when the
Lucini brothers built a new factory and premises
at 64 Main Road, Hepburn Springs.
Guided tours are lead by proprietor and direct
descedant of the Lucini Family - Maria Viola.
Through completing a Master Thesis in Public
History at Monash University, Maria has extensively
researched her family's history. With this knowledge
Maria gives a rare account about her family's
life and shares with you the stories behind
Giacamo Lucini's unique frescoes that adorn
the ceilings. Much restoration has been done
to reveal these colourful frescoes that are
Australia's oldest and preserve her family's
history. They reflect complicated political
statements and lives and scenes of their Italian
homeland at beautiful Lake Maggiore.
The frescoes were painted between the years
1862-1864 and are located in the end pavilions
of the building. The Old Macaroni Factory stands
as an icon to the thousands of Italians from
the Canton of Ticino and northern Italian Alps
who settled in the area. Hear about how construction
began in 1859 and materials were from local
creek stones and hand made bricks. Glass was
brought up from Melbourne on bullock drays.
In 1990 Maria Viola inherited the Old Macaroni
Factory. As a fourth generation of the Lucini
family she has some early childhood memories
of visiting her father's cousin Rosa at the
property. On this tour she will share some rich
history and reflections of her family's amazing
story and the traditions, culture and memories
they have left behind.
